About the Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences

Historical note. The Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences was established on September 1, 1998. It continued to be the Faculty of Geography and Natural sciences till September 20, 2004 when it was upgraded to become the faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, which also included the faculty of mathematics and informatics. The faculty introduced new specializations “Country studies and international tourism”, Geoinformational mapping”. In September 2008, the faculty was reorganized and again became the Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences, which position it continues to enjoy to this day.

Teaching staff.The teaching staff takes care of the study and research process. It is represented by professors, doctors of sciences, associate professors, candidates of sciences, full members and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, honored workers of RF Higher Institutes of Education, honored workers of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District Education, Ugra.  

Scientific Research. The faculty members are closely involved into scientific research. The main directions of the scientific research: Continuation Education System Development applicable to natural sciences; Ecological sanitation of the Ugra territory (prognosis, analysis and solutions). The Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences has organized two scientific schools, consisting of the faculty teaching staff, postgraduates and students. The schools are headed by N. A. Ivanova (candidate of biological sciences, associate professor), E. S. Ovechkina (candidate of biological sciences, associate professor), S. N. Sokolov (candidate of geographical sciences, associate professor) and G. N. Grebennyuk (professor). There are more than 130 scientific and scholarly works published every year. There is a large number of monographs, study guides, laboratory-based practicals, articles, journal reports, collections of scientific papers and conference proceedings of different ranks. In 2006, 2007, 2008 the faculty teaching staff was awarded grants of the Governor of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District.

Cooperation. The faculty closely co-operates with the following universities in the sphere of organization of educational process: Lomonosov Moscow State University, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, St. Petersburg State Pedagogical University. The Faculty of Geography and Natural Sciences maintains a co-operative association in with different institutions in the field of scientific research: Institute for Water and Environmental Problems SB RAS, Institute of Geography SB RAS, Central Siberian Botanical Garden SB RAS, Khanty-Mansiysk Regional Department of Russian Academy of natural sciences, Siberian Research and Design Institute of rational nature usage, Natural park “Kondinskyie Lakes”. In an international perspective, the faculty is unusually comprehensive. Since 2002 the faculty was visited by delegations from universities of France, Japan and Czech Republic.  The realization of the International Tempus Project “Education as a basis of sustainable use of natural resources” has been carried out since 2004 to 2006. The project was carried out in association with different universities of Hanover (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Belgorod, Maikop, Astrakhan (Russia), Institute of Geography SB RAS (Moscow), Institute of landscape design (Ehrfuhrt, Germany).

Students Life. An active social life is as much a part of university life as studying. Students successfully show their worth in university and town competitions “The Square of Cleanliness”, “The Sanitary Brigade Contest” and intellectual shows “What? Where? When?”, “Brain Ring”. Besides, they regularly participate in international ecological action “Save and Preserve”. Since 2002  the faculty has been the organizer of festival of youth creative and research works “The Polar Country” and there are many pupils from Nizhnevartovsk, Megion, Pockachi, who are actively involved. The faculty’s “security school” members have been prize winners for several times in water, activities, pass hopping, walking and ski tourism as well as in review competitions among sanitary brigades.
